Kinsmen Report: November 2018

Hello everyone from the Bible Hill Kinsmen! We’re midway through November and our members are busy planning a number of events as 2019 is just on the horizon.

On Thursday, the club is hosting an open house and Buddy Night. It’s a chance for anyone who has an interest in joining the Kinsmen to get a closer look at what we do and meet members of the club. Our meetings are held the first and third Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Douglas Street Recreation Centre. For this night, we’ll be on hand at 6 p.m. and if you’re interested in joining us send an email to president@biblehillkinsmen.com.

The Truro Festival of Lights is on Friday, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Civic Square. The Bible Hill Kinsmen will be on hand once again serving hot chocolate, courtesy of Sobeys, and handing out candy canes.

Tickets are now available for the Ultimate NHL Road Trip in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada. This is an annual fundraiser, and the grand prize will send you and a guest to three NHL games in three nights: Pittsburgh at Montreal on March 15th, Dallas at Ottawa on March 16th, and Montreal at Toronto on March 17th. Tickets are just $10, are only sold in Atlantic Canada, and just 9,000 have been printed! Contact us on Facebook or by email at info@biblehillkinsmen.ca.

As we look into next month, the annual Teddy Bear Toss will be held Sunday, December 2nd at 2 p.m. as the Truro Bearcats face the Miramichi Timberwolves at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre. Over the five years of this event, a partnership between our Kinsmen club and the Bearcats, more than 1,200 teddy bears have been donated. The Teddy Bear Toss is held in support of the Colchester Christmas Index Program. Come out and root for the Bearcats, but don’t forget to bring a few teddy bears in plastic bags to throw on the ice when the home team scores!

And the Kinsmen will be hosting their New Year’s Eve Dance at Bible Hill Junior High School. DJ Harv will be the entertainment, with a 9 p.m. start time. There’s also a cash bar, and attendees must be 19+. Tickets are $25 each and are available from any of our club’s members or by emailing newyearsdance@biblehillkinsmen.ca. They’re also available at MacQuarries Pharmasave on the Esplanade. Don’t wait to grab your tickets and we can’t wait to ring in 2019 with you!

Kinsmen Report: November 2017

Hello everyone from the Bible Hill Kinsmen! We’ve been very busy this fall, with preparations well underway for a number of projects and events.

Our members were once again on site at Civic Square on Truro for the Festival of Lights. Despite the weather not completely cooperating, it was a great night! Hot chocolate proved popular once again, as the never-ending line seemed to show. It was great to see so many people on hand that night, and especially the next evening as Santa took the usual route through the downtown.

The Bible Hill Kinsmen are partnered once again with the Truro Bearcats for the annual Teddy Bear Toss. With the World Junior A Challenge coming very soon, the Bearcats had their last home game of the calendar year on November 29th. A total of 259 teddy bears were collected by our members, and they (the teddy bears, not the Kinsmen) will be distributed through the Christmas Index Program.

You may also have noticed some signage around town for a New Year’s Dance this year at Bible Hill Junior High School. Last year’s smashing success has us excited to see what this year has in store. Big Dog 100.9’s Tyler Granter, also a member of our club, will serve as the DJ. Tickets are $20 per person and you must be at least 19 years of age to attend. The event will runs from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., and please contact any of our members with any questions. You can also email newyearsdance@biblehillkinsmen.ca with any questions.

It’s hard to believe that we’re coming up on the 5th Annual Great Trivia Challenge. There are some big plans in store, which we’ll soon reveal.

We hold meetings on the first and third Thursday of the month, from September to June, at 7:30 p.m. at the Douglas Street Recreation Centre. We’d love to see you there. If you’re interested in joining us for a meeting, or would like more information, email president@biblehillkinsmen.ca.

2017 Truro Festival of Lights

What a night at Civic Square! The tree is lit and now we can’t wait for the Santa Claus Parade. The Bible Hill Kinsmen were on site, serving up hot chocolate provided by Sobeys on Prince Street. Based on the lineup, it was certainly in demand! We hope you all enjoyed the fun evening, even if the weather didn’t exactly cooperate.

Kinsmen Report: November

Hello everyone from the Bible Hill Kinsmen! It’s a busy time for everyone as we near the end of November, and we’re no different in that regard.

What a busy weekend we just had! We hope you enjoyed the hot chocolate served at the annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Truro’s Civic Square with help from the Sobeys on Prince Street. It’s always a big event in town, and the community shows up in a big way. Despite a bit of rain, we ended up handing out almost 1,300 cups of hot chocolate and the 500 candy canes went quick.

It was also nice to see Santa back in town the next day for his yearly visit. He looks as jolly as ever, despite the lack of snow.

The weekend prior, of course, was Remembrance Day. The turnout seems to grow each and every year, and a number of our members joined those in attendance. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Milk for Britain documentary, released this year, which commemorates the 75th anniversary of the influential Milk for Britain Campaign during World War II. It brought Kin and Canadians together to help send over 50 million quarts of milk to Britain and raised $3 million (equivalent to $42 million today) to feed British children. The Milk for Britain campaign is a significant and inspirational piece of Canada’s, and Kin’s, history. The documentary can be found on the Bible Hill Kinsmen website: biblehillkinsmen.ca.

You may have spotted a few posters around the community claiming our club is preparing to hold a New Year’s Dance this year at Bible Hill Junior High School? We are! The dance will run New Year’s Eve from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m., with Big Dog 100.9’s Tyler Granter as the DJ. Tickets are $20 per person and you must be at least 19 years of age to attend. Contact any of our members or email newyearsdance@biblehillkinsmen.ca with any questions.

The Bible Hill Kinsmen are again partnering with the Truro Bearcats for the annual Teddy Bear Toss! On December 3rd, as Truro faces South Shore, bring a teddy bear in a plastic bag to toss onto the ice when the Bearcats score their first goal. It’s always a lot of fun. Our members will collect the teddy bears and they’ll be distributed through the Christmas Index Program.

We hold meetings on the first and third Thursday of the month, from September to June, at 7:30 p.m. at the Douglas Street Recreation Centre. We’d love to see you there. If you’re interested in joining us for a meeting, or would like more information, email president@biblehillkinsmen.ca.
