Kinsmen Community Scavenger Hunt

We’ve all been a little cooped up over the last year, but now that the warmer weather is on the way the Bible Hill Kinsmen offer you a chance to get outside and have some fun – the Kinsmen Community Scavenger Hunt!

Teams of 4 with members of all ages will hop in the car and cruise around town searching for items on the Scavenger Hunt list. Items will be all shapes and sizes, ranging from common to quite unique. Each item will be worth a designated number of points, and the team with the highest score wins! This will not be a timed event, but once you arrive at the final checkpoint your score will be final and you will not be able to continue your search.

Registration is $40 per team. For more information, or to register, email secretary@biblehillkinsmen.ca or call (902) 957-2754. The registration form can be downloaded here.

#SickNotWeak Kitchen Party – A Virtual Hug for Central Nova Scotia

#SickNotWeak Kitchen Party – A Virtual Hug for Central Nova Scotia

(Truro, NS) – Online mental health organization #SickNotWeak announced today they will be hosting an virtual Kitchen Party this Saturday in support of all the folks in Nova Scotia and all they have been dealing with in recent weeks.

The event will be hosted by #SickNotWeak founder and media personality Michael Landsberg and feature a variety of guests including Premier Stephen McNeil, MP Lenore Zann, former Blue Jays GM and now Braves President Alex Anthopoulos, Sportsnet’s Arash Madani, hockey legend Hayley Wickenheiser, actor Jonathan Torrens, musicians Charlie A’Court and Robb Nash, comedian Sean Cullen, magician Ian Stewart (who will attempt to set a Guinness World Record for “most beer bottles opened with a chainsaw” because, why not?) and local first responders from Colchester County. More guests will be announced as they are confirmed.

“While 2020 has pretty much sucked for everyone, its been particularly hard on folks in Nova Scotia,” Landsberg said. “The goal of #SickNotWeak is always to offer a different take on mental health – one that’s more real and less clinical. So hosting something for folks who have been through so much already this year was a no-brainer for us.”

Sponsored by the Bible Hill Kinsmen, the event will be free to attend online (hosted on #SickNotWeak’s website, Facebook and Twitter sites) and open to anyone who wants to attend.

“People around here need a great big virtual hug,” said Quinn McCarthy of the Bible Hill Kinsmen. “I’m really excited to see so many great people coming together to help people here in central Nova Scotia get through what has been a really tough year so far.”

“The last thing people need right now is some preachy, clinical mental health discussion,” Landsberg added. “#SickNotWeak doesn’t do that. We’re here to help people feel connected and supported.”

Since the start of 2020, Nova Scotia – and particularly Colchester County – have endured a number of unprecedented tragedies. Like the rest of the world, they are locked down with the covid19 pandemic but they have also had to deal with the Portapique mass shooting, the crash of an RCAF CH-148 Cyclone that claimed two local lives, the crash of an RCAF Snowbird that claimed the life of Capt. Jenn Casey (a Halifax native) as well as other local events. As a tight-knit, largely rural community, not being able to gather to properly grieve these events has been particularly hard. We hope that events like this will help people come together online.

Kinsmen Club of Bible Hill makes a historic donation

February 19th, 2020 – The Kinsmen Club of Bible Hill is marking 100 years of Kin Canada in a big way. Club members have decided to make two large pledges, one of them the largest single donation in the 45-year history of the local club

The first is a gift of $100,000 over 10 years to the Douglas Street Recreation Centre in Truro. The funding will be used to help with the creation of additional green space, playground equipment and renovations to make the space more inviting to the general public. The second donation is a pledge of $25,000 over five years for the Colchester Community Workshops Foundation for the expansion of the Workshops’ space at the former Halliday’s building, now called Delaney House.

“We wanted to do something big to mark 100 years of Kin and help the community as much as possible,” said Club President Quinn McCarthy. “The pledge to Douglas Street Recreation Centre will allow for renovations and upgrades that can be enjoyed by everyone in the local area. The commitment to the Workshops Foundation will ensure an important community organization is able to get the space it sorely needs to expand its programming. It’ll mean a lot of work for our 25 members, but we believe it will have a large impact. These donations match up perfectly with Kin Canada’s motto of ‘serving the community’s greatest need.’”

The cheque to CCWF will be presented on Friday, February 21st at 12 pm (168 Arthur Street in Truro). A cheque will then be presented to Douglas Street Recreation Centre (40 Douglas Street) at 1 pm, with a flag-raising to follow to mark 100 years of Kin Canada. All are invited to attend.

The 6th Annual Great Trivia Challenge is in the books!

The 6th Annual Great Trivia Challenge is in the book and what a night it was! Thank you to everyone who took part last night, and to those who supported the event through other means like donations for the silent auction, balloon pop prize and so much more. The Best Western Glengarry was packed with trivia buffs from across the region, once again supporting the Lotus Centre and their Girl Power Camps. We’ll have an announcement on our donation in the near future.

Before we get to the winners, what would the evening be without a balloon pop?

At the end of the evening, there were a few prizes to dish out. The Einstein Award for the last place team went to Sobeys Robie #2, pictured with Trivia Night committee members Andrew St. Coeur (left) and Mark Thibedeau (right).

Third place went to Burchell MacDougall, with 74 points.

After ten rounds and 100 questions, did we have a winner? Well, it took a tiebreaker! Insane Trivia Posse and AutoChoice tied with 77 correct answers. In the end, AutoChoice picked up the win!

2018 Teddy Bear Toss

The Bible Hill Kinsmen were on hand tonight for the 6th Annual Teddy Bear Toss, in partnership with the Truro Jr. A Bearcats. Truro scored early in the game against the Miramichi Timberwolves, and 319 stuffed animals were tossed on the ice! That’s a record and means nearly 1,500 have been collected at the event over the last six years. Once again, the stuffed animals will be distributed through the local Christmas Index Program. Thank you for taking part, and watch all of the fun below!
