Kinsmen Report: June 2018

2018 MS Walk at Douglas Street Recreation Centre.

The current Kin year has come to an end with a number of events and activities for members of the Kinsmen Club of Bible Hill over the past two months.

Our annual pork chop dinner was held at the end of April, and is a fun event for our members. We appreciate your continued support and appreciate all of the feedback. It sounds like everyone enjoyed their meal!

Then, of course, we get to the 3rd Annual Colchester Book Fair. With generous donations from the community and a partnership this year with the Slate Youth Centre, we were able to transform a room in the Truro Mall into a haven for booklovers. A lot of preparation goes into this event, but it’s worth it to see the community come out in search of some good reading material. Whether it was just a handful or a few bags, it’s fair to say a lot of people walked away happy.

We were called upon to help with the MS Walk in Truro on May 27th at the Douglas Street Recreation Centre. From all accounts, the event was one of the most successful in our area, and we were once again proud to be able to lend a hand.

The Thrill of the Grill Eggfest was held on June 16th in Upper Onslow, presented by Warmth by Design. Our members were on hand running a beer tent, and also held a 50/50 draw.

Kinsmen and Kinettes from across the region converged on Acadia University in Wolfville earlier this month for our annual District Convention. It’s a chance to meet like-minded community volunteers from other clubs, set goals and a vision for the future of District 7 (which our club is part of), and of course enjoy the fellowship that comes along with it.

The Sackville Kinsmen/K-40 hosted the Annual District 7 Golf Tournament just last weekend at the Debert Golf Club. The Bible Hill Kinsmen sent five members, and while we didn’t win, it was a great afternoon of golf and fellowship. This is just one of the regional events held throughout the year.

With all of that said, we do have a few announcements coming and donations to give out. Stay tuned for those.

And as another kin year comes to an end, we look ahead to 2018-19, which means meetings starting again in September. To that end, the club held elections for a new executive. John Spears will serve as president for the third time. The rest of the executive is as follows, and congratulations to each:

  • Vice-president: Mark Thibedeau
  • Secretary: Glen MacKenzie
  • Bulletin Editor: Stephen Hamlin
  • Treasurer: Allison MacDonald
  • Registrar: Drew MacGregor
  • Risk Manager: Brent Pettis
  • Membership and Awards Director: Geoff Hamlin
  • Communications Director: James Faulkner

The Kinsmen Club of Bible Hill meets on the first and third Thursday of the month, from September to June, at 7:30 p.m. at the Douglas Street Recreation Centre. If you’re interested in joining us for a meeting, or would like more information, email president@biblehillkinsmen.ca.

Kinsmen Report: April 2018

Hello from the Bible Hill Kinsmen! April is flying by and we’re excited about a pair of big events coming up.

The first is our annual pork chop dinner. Tickets are $10 and the meal includes a pork chop (obviously) and a baked potato, as well as coleslaw, a roll, and a slice of apple pie. The dinner is pick-up only, and will be available at the Bible Hill Village Hall on Pictou Road from 4 to 6 p.m. on May 4th. For more information or for tickets, contact one of our members, email porkchop@biblehillkinsmen.ca, or call 902-957-2754.

We’re also very busy getting ready for the 3rd Annual Colchester Book Fair during Mother’s Day weekend. The two-day sale will be held at May 11th from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and on May 12th from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., both days at the Truro Mall, in a space near the lotto booth. Proceeds from this year’s event will go to Slate Youth Centre, as well as local groups and organizations supported by the Kinsmen.

Donations have come from a number of places. From estates, to businesses, to people bringing a few boxes at a time to the various drop-off locations around the area, it’s incredible to see how such a large, empty area with tables lined up turns into a packed space. Books will be sold by weight again this year, with hard and soft covers priced separately.

There are seven drop-off locations for this year’s sale: Masstown Market, Sobeys on Prince St and Robie St in Truro, the book fair location at the Truro Mall, Shur Gain Feeds ‘n Needs, Fundy Appliance in Bible Hill, the Truro Farmer’s Market, and Slate Youth Centre. Donations can include books, puzzles, games, DVDs, CDs, vinyl, and comic books. However, the book fair is unable to accept technical manuals, encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines, VHS tapes, or Reader’s Digest Condensed Editions.

For more information on the sale, or to ask a question, email bookfair@biblehillkinsmen.ca.

We’d love to see you at one of our meetings. The Bible Hill Kinsmen hold meetings on the first and third Thursday of the month, from September to June, at 7:30 p.m. at the Douglas Street Recreation Centre. If you’re interested in joining us for a meeting, or would like more information, email president@biblehillkinsmen.ca.

Kinsmen Report: May

Hello everyone, from the Bible Hill Kinsmen!

We recently held our annual pork chop dinner at the Bible Hill Village Hall. Not only is it a big fundraiser for us, but the food was delicious! The pork chops themselves were from Ebbett’s Meadow Brook Farm Market in Tatamagouche.

A highlight for the club, at any time of year, is watching our members be recognized for their hard work. Brad McCallum and Dave Gillis, both part of this year’s executive, have received the Maple Leaf Award of Distinction from Kin Canada. To earn this award, a member has to complete a number of tasks within their first two years with the group. That can range from chairing a project, to being elected to the executive for a year, to attending district and national conventions.

We’ve been focusing our efforts on the 1st Annual Colchester Book Fair from 6 to 9 p.m. on June 3rd and from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on June 4th . The Kinsmen are partnering with NovelTea Bookstore Café to continue a decade’s long community tradition, which was previously run by the Canadian Federation of University Women. It has relocated to the Eagles Landing Building at 510 Prince Street (the former MacQuarries Pharmasave location). Proceeds from the event will support the Colchester East Hants Library Foundation and other Kinsmen community projects.

Drop-off locations are Enterprise Rent-A-Car, NovelTea Bookstore Café, Shur Gain Feeds n Needs, and Sobeys on Robie Street in Truro, as well as Century Hyundai and Fundy Appliance in Bible Hill.

The Bible Hill Kinsmen hold meetings on the first and third Thursday of the month, from September to June, at 7:30 p.m. We’d love to see you there. If you’re interested in joining us for a meeting, or would like more information, email president@biblehillkinsmen.ca.

Kinsmen Report: April

The Bible Hill Kinsmen recently presented a $6,000 cheque to the We Care About Cancer Fund earlier this month.

The proceeds came from the Great Trivia Challenge, which was held in February. Thanks to everyone who came out for that event and supported this great cause. The rest of the money raised from that event will be distributed by the Kinsmen through our various initiatives in the community.

April is rolling on and spring has finally arrived. That means it’s time to look ahead to the annual Kinsmen pork chop dinner. It will be held May 19 at the Bible Hill Village Hall from 4:30 to 6 p.m. All Kinsmen members have tickets or you can email porkchop@biblehillkinsmen.ca. The pork chops are from Ebbett’s Meadow Brook Farm Market in Tatamagouche. The dinner also includes a baked potato, coleslaw, a roll and piece of pie.

We’d also like to say thank you for your continued support of the kindness meters in downtown Truro. It’s been a huge success so far and we will soon be looking at switching recipients of the money which you’re generously donating in these meters.

The Bible Hill Kinsmen hold meetings on the first and third Thursday of the month, from September to June, at 7:30 p.m. We’d love to see you there. If you’re interested in joining us for a meeting, or would like more information, email president@biblehillkinsmen.ca.
